With the 2016 high school baseball season getting underway this week in what should be another fantastic season, the Deseret News has compiled capsules for every 4A team in the state with information on what to expect this season.

The region rankings are based on coaches' preseason projections. Every coach was invited to participate and submit information on their team.

There are four new head baseball coaches in 4A this year: Jentry Beckstead (Alta), Trent Syme (Payson), Scott Jorgensen (Bonneville) and Ken Carlson (Mountain View).

Here's a region-by-region look at all 28 teams in 4A.

Coach Comment: “We have a lot to replace from last year. I love our leaders. We have some incredible kids who have great leadership, but we lost some great leaders a year ago. We are pretty young in a lot of places, so we may have to transition in some ways, but the young guys are going to have to step up. We are excited for the year and ready to get going.”

We also have two returning pitchers from our varsity pitching staff and are working on building up three to four more pitchers to help round out the staff. Our guys have a strong desire to be as competitive as possible.”

Haydn Stender, Sr., 1B

Dylan Rodriguez, Jr., IF/OF

Coach Comment: “The Bees have five solid returning starters to build a varsity lineup around. We look forward to continuing the process of our program. That process is growing, learning, and competing to run deep in the state tournament. We have built a lot of player depth which are still somewhat young and lack varsity experience but will compete hard every pitch.”

REGION 5: Bonneville High School

Jeff Black, Sr., CF

Hunter Knaphus, Sr., P/IF

Sam Wankier, Sr., C

Jack Shipman, Sr., P/1B

Harrison Vandyke, Sr., IF/OF

Coach Comment: “Following a major rebuilding year in 2015, a year in which the Leopards' coaching staff made a commitment to youth with five freshman and sophomores regularly starting at the varsity level, East looks to build on that experience in 2016. With almost all starters returning from last year's squad, the coaching staff is excited to take the field with this year's team. While still young, the hard knocks experienced last year, will toughen and ready this group for the challenge of a realigned Region 5. ”

REGION 5: Ogden High School

2016 Team Schedule

Head Coach: Troy Kolan

2015 Record: 4-19 (Seventh in Region 5 with 1-17 record)

2015 Postseason: Did not qualify

Returning Contributors:

AJ Anderson, Sr.

Miguel Cisneros, Jr.

Coach Comment: “The Ogden Tigers lost four seniors from last season and also Matt Richardson due to a football injury. The team is young but has played a lot of baseball together. AJ Anderson is a four-year returning starter and will look to provide leadership for the ball club. The pitching staff only lost one player from last season and will look for contributions from Miguel Cisneros, Max DeCorso, Nick Freeman and Matt Garceau.”

REGION 6: Murray High School

2016 Team Schedule

Head Coach: Marce Wilson

2015 Record: 11-13 (Fifth in Region 7 with 5-7 record)

Returning Contributors:

Zach Collins, Sr., C

Ryan Topham, Sr., SS

2016 Team Schedule

Head Coach: Brent Burton

2015 Record: 14-12 (Fourth in Region 7 with 7-5 record)

REGION 6: Skyline High School

2016 Team Schedule

Head Coach: Erik Hansen

2015 Record: 17-10 (2nd in Region 1 with 8-4 record)

Returning Contributors:

Nick Scott, Jr., OF/P

Hunter Wack, Sr., IF/P

Ethan Ritchie, Sr., OF

Coach Comment: “Even with the loss of seven key players from last year’s team, we can compete if we come together and gain confidence. We will be a fairly young team so we will see improvements as the season progresses. We have a lot of holes to fill but we have more pitching depth than we have had in years past. We will compete in Region 6 if our pitching and defense come together.”

REGION 6: Cyprus High School

REGION 6: Cyprus High School

2016 Team Schedule

Head Coach: Bob Fratto

2015 Record: 6-15 (Sixth in Region 6 with 5-9 record)

2015 Postseason: Did not qualify

Returning Contributors:

Rey Montoya, Sr.

Adrian Naranjo, Sr.

Colton Vandertoolen, Sr.

Malik Yarber, Sr.

Coach Comment: “We will go as far as these four seniors will lead us this year. Rey Montoya is the only returning full-time starter. Other than these four we have zero varsity experience. After Naranjo and Yarber we will be real young and inexperienced on the mound, which is a great concern. Very unusual for us to miss the state tournament like we did last year. So I hope this left a bad taste in their mouth and we can qualify again this season. Bottom line is we got some work to do!!”

REGION 6: Hillcrest High School

2016 Team Schedule

Head Coach: Gary Daniels

2015 Record: 10-17 (Third in Region 2 with 8-7 record)

Additional information not provided

REGION 7: Timpanogos High School

2016 Team Schedule

Head Coach: Kim Nelson

2015 Record: 21-9 (First in Region 7 with 9-3 record)

2015 Postseason: Lost to Salem Hills in 4A winners bracket; Eliminated by Maple Mountain in 4A one-loss bracket

Coach Comment: “Timpanogos surprised a few and won Region 7 last year with 10 of the top 12 players underclassmen. Expectations are higher to start with for 2016. They return 15 of 21 wins on the mound with Tyler Cornish, Derik Eaquinto and Blake Lasike leading the way. They are also returning 10 of the top 11 hitters with Tanner Evans (all-state), Brayden Millet, Casey Hamilton, DJ Martinez and all three of the already mentioned pitchers having roles with the bat as well. Timpanogos hopes for the experience of last year paying dividends for an even better finish this 2016 season.”

REGION 7: Orem High School

2016 Team Schedule

Head Coach: Carl Hermansen

2015 Record: 18-10 (Second in Region 7 with 8-4 record)

2015 Postseason: Lost to Spanish Fork in 4A first round; Eliminated by Maple Mountain in 4A one-loss bracket

Coach Comment: “We have a great group of returning seniors that have worked very hard in the offseason. Getting a small taste of the tournament last year has given the boys a goal to strive for. Getting that experience last year was critical. We return our top pitchers in Paxton Schultz and Parker Wollaston. Our lineup will also include a number of key contributors from last year including Jake Herman, Fisher Hermansen, Zack Lamoreaux, Jake Stayner, and Keven Balser. With that core, we know we will be very competitive in every situation.”

REGION 7: Corner Canyon High School

2016 Team Schedule

Head Coach: Daron Connolly

2015 Record: 10-14 (Seventh in Region 7 with 1-10 record)

2015 Postseason: Did not qualify

Returning Contributors:

Brayden Erickson, Sr., P

Calvin Millich, Sr., OF/P

Cade Lawson, Sr., OF

Tommy Groskreutz, Sr., P

Braden Larson, Sr., P

Nicholson Garrett, Jr., IF

Colson Anderson, Jr., OF

Marshall Nice, Jr., OF/P

Andrew Astin, So., IF/P

Conner Ebeling, So., IF/P

Braden Winget, So., IF/C

Coach Comment: “We are entering our third year of the program. We've only graduated four players in two years. This year we have strong leadership in six seniors who have logged significant varsity time since they were sophomores. Our first year (2014) we had five wins. Last year (2015) we had eleven wins. This year we expect our win total to increase significantly. We have depth in our pitching ranks and our defense has improved significantly. We have the talent to be two deep at every position. If our pitchers throw strikes, we play catch on defense and apply pressure on our opponents by putting the ball in play when at the plate, we’ll be a formidable team. Our expectation is to make the 4A playoffs and be competitive the entire 2016 season. “Respect Everyone, Fear No One” will be the rallying cry in 2016 for the Corner Canyon Chargers baseball program.”

REGION 7: Provo High School

2016 Team Schedule

Head Coach: Lance Moore

2015 Record: 13-14 (Fourth in Region 8 with 6-6 record)

2015 Postseason: Lost to Timpanogos in 4A first round; Eliminated by 4A one-loss bracket

Returning Contributors:

Kory Hernandez, Sr., SS/P

Trapper Denton, Sr., C/P

Jack Rhineer, Sr., P/1B

Max Hoopes, Sr., P/2B

McKade Williamson, Jr., P/3B

Coach Comment: “The Bulldogs return plenty of experience and success on the mound with Denton, Rhineer, and Hoopes, and excellent senior leadership in Kory Hernandez who moves to short from centerfield last year. Ultimately, if the Bulldogs play defense as well as they did last year, and if their offense can put runs on the board, their three strike-throwing machines will be successful. To complement the senior class, many of Provo's juniors have worked very hard to improve their stock in the program; Tanner Dearden, McKade Williamson, Peyton Griffin, Tavo Guerra, Carson Brown, Antonia Pena and Danilo Ortolano are all juniors who will compete for playing time; many of these juniors, along with sophomore utility man JR Kanamu will help determine the level of success that the Bulldogs have this year.”

REGION 7: Alta High School

2016 Team Schedule

Head Coach: Jentry Beckstead (1st Year)

2015 Record: 2-19 (Sixth in Region 3 with 2-13 record)

2015 Postseason: Did not qualify

Additional information not provided

REGION 7: Mountain View High School

2016 Team Schedule

Head Coach: Ken Carlson (1st Year)

2015 Record: 6-15 (Sixth in Region 7 with 4-8 record)

2015 Postseason: Did not qualify

Returning Contributors:

Brigham Bateman, Sr., SS

Caleb Moore, Sr., P/OF

TJ Crossett, So., C/3B

Davis Abbott, Sr., 1B

Conner Hatch, Jr., 2B

Coach Comment: “Our top three pitchers from last year graduated so we will look for some younger guys to step up at that position. We have some very good sophomore pitchers that will need to mature early. The talent is there on this team to be successful if we get a good combination of leadership from our upperclassmen and maturity from our talented sophomores. ”

REGION 7: Timpview High School

2016 Team Schedule

Head Coach: Cameron Whatcott

2015 Record: 1-21 (Seventh in Region 8 with 0-12 record)

2015 Postseason: Did not qualify

Returning Contributors:

AJ Bollinger is a returning 4-year starter and he is a great player at any position. Aaron (Tua) Ward returns to Timpview after being gone for two years, and will be a great addition to our pitching staff. Both of these seniors have great bats and add depth to our pitching rotation which will help us out a lot this year as long with ten leadership.

Coach Comment: “Although Timpview is coming off a winless season, we feel the tide is turning and that is going to change this year with conference realignment and the fact that we are returning our whole team even though it is still pretty young, with only five seniors, nine juniors and four sophomores. These boys have put in a lot of work in the offseason. We are hoping to have that pay off big time this year and plan to make the playoffs for the first time in a long time.”

REGION 8: Salem Hills High School

2016 Team Schedule

Head Coach: Scott Haney

2015 Record: 25-5 (First in Region 8 with 10-2 record)

2015 Postseason: Lost to Spanish Fork in 4A winners bracket; Eliminated by Maple Mountain in 4A one-loss bracket

Returning Contributors:

Cooper Smith, Sr., CF/P

Tanner Hamblin, Sr., 3B/P

Sam Callister, Sr., C/P

Riley Pierce, Sr., OF/P

Colton Lundell, Sr., 1B/P

Coach Comment: “Salem Hills has a great group of senior leaders. Great team speed and power. Juniors, Kaden Stewart and Caleb Centeno should add to an already strong pitching staff. Region 8 will be extremely tough and evenly matched.”

REGION 8: Spanish Fork High School

2016 Team Schedule

Head Coach: Casey Nelson

2015 Record: 15-14 (Second in Region 8 with 9-3 record)

2015 Postseason: Beat Maple Mountain in 4A championship game

Returning Contributors:

Devin Argyle, Sr. 2B

Riley Daniels, Sr. RHP, 3B

Tanner Argyle, Jr. SS, RHP

Coach Comment: “Spanish Fork has three returners who played a valuable role in last year’s state championship run. There will be a lot juniors looking to prove themselves. Spanish Fork will have depth on the mound and quality personnel to back up and push starters. There’s a lot of competition between players at almost every position.”

REGION 8: Maple Mountain High School

2016 Team Schedule

Head Coach: Gary Miner

2015 Record: 22-11 (Third in Region 8 with 8-4 record)

2015 Postseason: Lost to Skyline in 4A first round; Eliminated by Spanish Fork in 4A championship game

Returning Contributors:

Jaren Hall, Sr., CF

Kade Poulsen, Sr., SS/P

Sam Moore, Sr., C/3B

Dallon Peterson, Sr., P

Tyson Ellis, Jr., P

Wes Childs, Jr., P

Coach Comment: “Four-year varsity starters Jaren Hall and Kade Poulsen along with fellow senior Sam Moore anchor the Golden Eagle lineup that will need help from a new cast of contributors to make a run in talented Region 8. Hall, Poulsen and Moore had a combined 271 varsity at-bats last year compared to only 64 varsity at-bats from the rest of the possible 2016 MMHS lineup. As much experience as was lost from the batting order for Maple Mountain was retained in the pitching staff. Maple Mountain graduated two pitchers from last year’s staff and returns pitchers that threw 171 innings of the 211 MMHS pitchers threw in 2015.”

REGION 8: Springville High School

2016 Team Schedule

2015 Record: 13-11 (Fifth in Region 8 with 5-7 record)

Caden Kelley, Sr., IF

Josh Darrow, Sr., IF

Treven Hansen, Sr., C
