From tech billionaires who strike it rich in Silicon Valley to farm girls who make it big on Broadway, we hear a lot about the American Dream. But where is it really the most likely that Americans will climb their way up the income ladder?

NerdWallet recently used data from The Equality of Opportunity Project to determine which city in each state provides the best chances for upward mobility. They looked at absolute upward mobility (how much more people make than their parents), relative upward mobility (the chance that someone will make more than their parents) and the chances that someone will move from the bottom fifth of the income ladder to the top fifth.

For example, is a child in New York City or Waterton, New York, more likely to achieve a higher income than his or her parents?

Click through this list to find out which city in each state* has the highest chances of upward mobility. The list starts with cities with the best chances for income growth and goes down from there.

* Some states had fewer than five cities in the study. They were not included.
