From John Ford Westerns to sci-fi thrillers, Utah has hosted a steady stream of filmmakers for more than 70 years. According to the Utah Film Commission, as of June 2017, nearly 1,000 films have been shot in Utah. Some movies only show brief snippets of Utah's landscape, while others are shot entirely in the state.

Here is a list of 55 of the films shot in Utah.

"Stagecoach" (1939)

"Stagecoach" launched many firsts: John Ford's first Monument Valley film and John Wayne's first starring role. The tale of a stagecoach threatened by Geronimo in the wild West earned Ford a Best Director Oscar.

"Billy the Kid" (1941)

Utah locations: Kanab Movie Ranch, Paria Canyon, Monument Valley

"Billy the Kid" tells the story of one of the West's last outlaws and his quest for vengeance.

"She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" (1949)

In the film, John Wayne stars as Captain Nathan Brittles who, on the eve of retirement, takes one last patrol to stop an Indian attack. His mission becomes perilous when he has to evacuate his commanding officer's wife and niece.

"Wagon Master" (1950)

Two young drifters lead a Mormon wagon train to the promised land in this John Ford Western.

"Rio Grande" (1950)

Starring John Wayne, the film follows Union officer Kirby Yorke as he tries to repair his estranged relationship with his son and wife amidst the war with the Apaches.

"The Conqueror" (1956)

Despite being a film about Mogul emperor Genghis Khan (played by John Wayne), "The Conqueror" was almost exclusively filmed in Utah.

Shot downwind from a nuclear testing site, the film has become infamous due to the high rate of cancer cast and crew members experienced — 91 out of 210. John Wayne was just one of the cast to die from cancer.

"How the West Was Won" (1962)

Starring Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, Gregory Peck and John Wayne, the star-packed "How the West Was Won" followed a family across generations as members took part in the expansion of the West.

Director George Stevens used Utah's landscape to portray several scenes from Christ's life in this film.
