One Boy Scout was in critical condition and five others suffered lesser injuries when lightning struck during an outing on a Scout ranch, camp and hospital officials say.

The six Scouts, all from Monroe, Wis., were injured around noon Thursday at a camp about nine miles west of Philmont Scout Ranch headquarters, 30 miles south of the Colorado border in northeastern New Mexico, ranch spokesman Nick Amann said.

Barry Alan Kneller, 18, was listed in critical condition at Miner's Colfax Medical Center in Raton, student nurse John DeChamp said late Thursday.

"Two other scouts, Dan Whitehead and Phil Bernhagen, both 17, are in stable condition," Amann said.
