Authorities have released 390 people arrested in student riots in March and June, the state radio said.

The broadcast said those freed Thursday included 229 students, 147 civilians and 14 government employees. It said 240 people were freed in the national capital of Rangoon and the others in the cities of Pegu, Prome and Moulmein.

The broadcast said some people were freed unconditionally and others on bail. It did not say how many people had been arrested, but it said releases will continue.

In the most recent riots in Rangoon on June 21, university students demanded that the government legalize student unions and free students detained in earlier protests.
