Officials in Soweto said they plan electrical blackouts to counter a two-year boycott of rent and service payments by residents of the country's largest black township.

Local officials switched off power for several hours Wednesday evening to three sections of Soweto. The action forced postponement of a professional soccer game, put out street lights and prompted some police and fire stations to operate on emergency generators.

On Thursday officials said they planned more blackouts.

The blackouts affect all residents in the targeted areas, not just those participating in the boycott.
