A British tourist was sentenced to three months in jail for tearing up $11 worth of Kenyan banknotes at a Nairobi airport, a newspaper reported.

Edward James Lewin admitted mutilating six notes, worth $11, at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport departure lounge on Tuesday night, The Standard newspaper reported Thursday.

Lewin was about to catch a flight home to London when security police found the money on him and advised him to change it into foreign currency, the paper said.

But Lewin angrily tore up the notes, bearing the portrait of President Daniel arap Moi, it said.
