The army was called out Friday to help rescue an estimated 4 million people stranded by flooding as the death toll in five days of monsoon rains reached 91, officials and newspapers said.
At least 27 people were killed Thursday as floodwaters spread from the country's northeast into the southeast district of Chittigong, the Bengali-language newspapers Ittihad and Sangbad reported Friday.Two of the victims Thursday were reported drowned in Chittigong. All the earlier victims were in the northeast, along the Indian border.
The Bengali-language newspapers said 4 million people were marooned, many trapped atop their homes or even in trees. Thousands of mud-and-thatch houses have been washed away by the surging waters, the papers said.
