Ingrid Kristiansen, Norway's great distance runner, has a benign ovarian tumor that her doctor said Friday will sideline her for at least six weeks."The tumor is not dangerous," Dr. Hans Gerhard Hovind said of the 31-year-old world champion who lost her first 10,000-meter race last Saturday. "Most people don't know that they have them but you do feel it when you work hard."
The large tumor in the right ovary measures 3 centimeters by 5 centimeters.
Kristiansen, world-record holder at 5,000 and 10,000 meters and the marathon, was forced to stop twice during her 10,000-meter duel over the weekend with Britain's Liz Lynch-McColgan.
