One woman died and two men were injured Thursday morning when their car left Provo Canyon Road and flipped into the Provo River.
Julianna Crosby, Patrick Harold Newton and Stewart Reeves, all 18-year-old Brigham Young University students living in Provo, were eastbound about two miles up the canyon when the accident occurred at 12:30 a.m., said a Utah Highway Patrol dispatcher. The car rolled when Newton lost control on a curve. Newton swam to safety after the car landed up-side-down in the water, while Reeves found an air pocket in the car and awaited rescuers. But Crosby's legs were pinned and she could not escape the vehicle.
Crosby was pronounced dead at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center about 1:45 a.m. Thursday. Newton and Reeves were treated for cuts and abrasions and are expected to be released Thursday, a hospital spokesman said.
Crosby is originally from Tennessee.
