A Salt Lake man who was chased and caught by several bystanders following an alleged sexual assault Wednesday night - has been booked into the Salt Lake County jail.

The victim told police she was assaulted about 10:15 p.m. while walking to her apartment after getting off a bus at First South and Main. She told police a man got off the bus at the same time and began following her, making suggestive remarks.The victim said she told the man to leave her alone, but the man persisted and then assaulted her.

A witness who saw the assault after hearing the victim's screams pursued the assailant as he tried to flee. The witness was joined by two other men who had been driving nearby and by a number of firemen from a station across the street.

The assailant was held for police, who arrived after being notified by a fire dispatcher.
