A West Valley man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of his wife.

John J. Quas, 37, faces the first-degree felony charge in 3rd Circuit Court.Quas was originally charged with second-degree murder in June 1987 in connection with the same shooting incident, but charges were dropped Aug. 3 after Judge Eleanor Van Sciver said there was not enough evidence to try Quas on a second-degree murder charge.

Quas reported to police June 15, 1987, that he had been in the shower when he heard a gunshot about 9:20 p.m. and discovered his wife, Susan M. Quas, then 35, dead in the living room of the couple's home at 3376 W. Sunnybrook Drive. The victim was shot once in the left eye, and a handgun was found near her body.

Quas told police his wife had been drinking heavily, had threatened to kill herself and was playing Russian roulette with a handgun.

According to the probable cause statement, a gunshot residue test indicated that Quas had recently fired a gun and that the victim had not.
