Australian Greg Norman reinjured his left wrist and withdrew from the British Open golf championship Wednesday.Officials of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews said Norman told them by telephone that he would be unable to compete next week at Royal Lytham-St. Ann's.
Norman, playing his first full practice round since withdrawing from the U.S. Open June 17, reinjured the wrist Monday in Orlando, Fla.
Norman, the 1986 British Open winner, aggravated an old injury at the U.S. Open when he hit a rock with a club while playing out of a rough.
At that time, Norman said he expected to be able to play in the 117th British Open.
"He called about lunch today and said the wrist still is troubling him. It just hasn't come around and he will not be able to play," said David Begg, a spokesman for the club.
