The state Department of Corrections is throwing a party for a longtime friend and everyone is invited.The Annual Fred House Memorial and Friendship Day - commemorating the life of Utah Corrections Lt. Fred House - will be July 16 at the Corrections Academy in Draper near the state prison.
The day's activities will include a five-kilometer run, a golf tournament, a combat pistol shoot, a karate demonstration by some of House's students and a wheelchair basketball game between wheelchair athletes and parole officers.
The 5K will start at 8 a.m. at the Corrections Academy and will end past the state prison. Race winners in men's, women's and wheelchair categories will get $500 in prizes. All runners will receive a memorial T-shirt or hat.
People interested in participating will be asked to pay a $10 entrance fee. Golf tournament participants are also responsible for green fees. The golf tournament will begin at 11 a.m. at the Spanish Oaks Golf Course in Spanish Fork Canyon.
House was killed Jan. 28 in the Singer-Swapp stand off in Marion, Summit County . His wife and three children were left without a life insurance policy. All proceeds from the event will go to the House family.
Interested donors can also make contributions to the Friends of Fred fund at Deseret First Credit Union, 6060 So. Third East in Murray.
According to Ken Halterman - chairman of the event's organizers, Friends of Fred - there will be lots of food and beverages at the event, which they hope to hold annually. "We are just hoping for a real jovial type atmosphere and a good day to remember Fred.
"Fred was just an amazing person that affected many people's lives," he said. "We really miss him. He is a guy who shouldn't be forgotten. He was bigger than life."
Participants may register at the Department of Corrections, 6100 S. Third East in Murray; the Utah County Sheriff's Office, 1775 South Dakota Lane in Provo; Eagle Co., 226 S. State; Strauss Co., 2275 S. West Temple, both in Salt Lake City; Lawco Police Supply in Ogden; or the Cottage, 570 Main in Park City.
Runners may also register on the day of the event at the Corrections Academy from 7 to 8 a.m. Combat pistol shoot participants can register that day starting at 8 a.m.
