Gov. Bob Martinez says Florida's new AIDS law is an innovative, wide-ranging approach that will "set the standard" for other states nationwide.

"It's the first comprehensive piece of legislation that deals with all the elements of AIDS - the illness itself, care for the patient, education, the non-compliant (carriers), research, the medicine. It's all rolled into one effort," Martinez said Wednesday after signing the AIDS legislation into law.

"Hopefully there will be a cure for (AIDS). But in the meanwhile, our main job here is to try to stop it spreading, so that when the cure comes, there are fewer people we have to deal with from the cure aspect."
