Soviet officials have completed inspections at two U.S. intermediate-range nuclear rocket sites in West Germany and are preparing to return to the United States, U.S. military officials said Wednesday.

U.S. Air Force officials said the teams had returned to Rhein-Main Air Base near Frankfurt after a full day of inspections and planned to return to the United States on Thursday.Nineteen Soviet specialists split into two teams on Tuesday to carry out their first inspections under the superpower treaty eliminating intermediate-range nuclear weapons.

The Soviet inspectors arrived in West Germany on Monday.

Air Force spokesman Lt. Col. Pat Maloney said the inspections took place at Wueschheim and Schwaebisch-Gmuend.

The Wueschheim cruise missile site is 25 miles south of Koblenz.

The Mutlangen Pershing 2 missile site at Schwaebisch-Gmuend is 27 miles east of Stuttgart.
