A Salt Lake woman was treated at Holy Cross Hospital Tuesday after she was attacked in her home by an intruder.

The woman, 42, said she was sleeping in her home, in the area of Sixth East and Downington Avenue, about 6:15 a.m. when she was awakened by a man crouching by her bed, according to a police report.Wearing a mask and armed with a butcher knife, the intruder began "to pant and growl in a frightening manner," the woman told police.

The man began slashing at the woman, severing a tendon in her right hand, the report said.

The victim fought back, forcing the intruder to throw the knife at her then flee. She grabbed the knife and chased him out into her backyard, where the intruder fled down an alley, the report says.

Police, with the help of a neighbor, apprehended a man near Sixth East and Garfield Avenue.

Jeffrey Dean Baker, 28, 7904 Thornton Circle, Sandy, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated burglary and aggravated assault and on a traffic warrant.
