A 5-year-old girl who was run over when she fell from the tailgate of a pickup truck was released Tuesday from Primary Children's Medical Center.

Ashly Albrand, 5327 S. Ben Davis Parkway, was riding on the tailgate of a truck driven backward by a teen-aged Murray boy when the truck hit a curb, bouncing the girl off the truck.Cassie Larsen, 5327 S. Ben Davis Parkway, was also riding on the tailgate and run over by the truck. The 11-year-old was taken to Alta View Hospital where she was treated and released.

Witnesses, who told police the driver seemed to be "giving the girls a joy ride," said the truck was going 25 to 30 mph in reverse when it struck the curb and ran over the girls.

The driver of the truck was Kevin Shepherd, 17, of 707 E. Clover Crest. According to police reports, he was taking some boxes to a Dumpster on private property near 8385 S. Sixth West about 7 p.m. Monday when the accident occurred.

Shepherd told police he had driven through some water, then decided to drive back through the water in reverse.
