Friends of Lt. Fred House, killed at the conclusion of the Singer-Swapp standoff earlier this year, are staging a 5K Memorial Run at Point of the Mountain Corrections Academy, east of Utah State Prison, at 8 a.m. July 16.
Winners in men's, women's and wheelchair categories will receive up to $500 in prizes. All runners will be given T-shirts or hats. Refreshments will be available; spectators are advised to bring chairs and shade.Other activities to be held in connection with the run include karate demonstrations by Lt. House's students and Shotokan Karate of America, a combat pistol shoot, a wheelchair basketball game at noon and a golf tournament.
Proceeds will go to the slain officer's three children. Donations may be made to Friends of Fred, Deseret First Credit Union, 6060 S. Third East, Murray.
Participants may register for any of the events at Corrections Headquarters, 6100 S. Third East, Murray; the Utah County Sheriff's Office, Provo; Eagle Co., 226 S. State; Strauss Co., 2275 S. West Temple; Lawco Police Supply, Ogden; or the Cottage, 570 Main, Park City.
