A mentally handicapped woman wandered away from a landscaping crew she was working with near Utah State Prison and drowned in a canal Thursday afternoon, a Salt Lake County sheriff's dispatcher said.

The woman, Raylene Guss, 53, who lived in the Lindon Care and Training Center, was noticed missing about 1 p.m. After an hourlong search by fellow workers she was reported missing to authorities. The woman was last seen walking near the Draper Canal, the dispatcher said.Salt Lake County search-and-rescue workers found the woman in the canal at 12100 S. Seventh East. She was dead when she was pulled from the water, officials said.
