It was the highest number of Jews allowed out of the Soviet Union since June 1980, when 1,767 left the country, according to figures published by the Intergovernmental Committee for Migration.

In May, 1,145 Jews left the Soviet Union. A total of 6,017 have emigrated this year, which compares with 8,011 for all of 1987, the agency said.Only 127 of the June arrivals at its Vienna transit center went to Israel, bringing to 840 the number who chose the Jewish state this year, agency spokesman Regina Boucault said. - (AP)
