SALT LAKE CITY — The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square will celebrate Pioneer Day this year with a long-time favorite guest and friend.
On Thursday, the Choir announced that world-renowned Norwegian soprano Sissel will join The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square for this year's Pioneer Day concerts. The concerts will be held July 19 and 20 in the Conference Center, and will be conducted by music director Mack Wilberg and Ryan Murphy, associate music director.
“We are honored to have Sissel perform with us again,” said Wilberg in a press release. “The sincerity and purity of her voice captivates everyone who hears it. We first met her when she appeared with the Choir on "Music and the Spoken Word" in 2005 celebrating Norway’s 100th anniversary. We count her as one of the Choir’s closest friends.”
Perhaps best-known for her soaring vocals in the Oscar Award-winning film, "Titanic," Utah audiences will likely remember Sissel's 2006 Salt Lake visit when she performed with the Choir and Orchestra for their popular Christmas concerts. A recording of those concerts titled "Spirit of the Season" released in 2007 was No. 1 on Billboards Classical Chart for nine weeks and nominated for two Grammy awards for best classical crossover album of the year and best engineered classical album.
Sissel hasn't only given her ethereal voice to the Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square's holiday album; additionally, the soprano appeared on the 2013 album "Homeward Bound" with Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel and more recently on "Mormon Tabernacle Choir & Friends."
Although free, tickets are required for the Pioneer Day concerts. Those wishing to attend should watch for information on how to obtain tickets in mid-June. Note that admission to this event is limited to those ages 8 and older.
Both concerts will also have a stand-by line, which will form at the north gate on Temple Square at 6:30 p.m. for the evening performances.1 comment on this story
