Teammates Mckina Stacey, left, and Zoe Dean share a bitter-sweet moment after a sudden death playoff Wednesday in Richfield. Dean won the playoff to claim 1A medalist honors.

RICHFIELD — The Rich High School Rebels racked up several new personal peaks as they repeated as the 1A girls’ golf champs at Cove View Golf Course in Richfield Wednesday.

Rich’s girls tallied a 378, beating the second-place Milford team by 40 strokes.

The tough games carded by the Rebels resulted in two sophomore teammates facing off in a sudden-death playoff to determine the individual medalist.

Zoe Dean and Mckina Stacey both finished the tournament with 91s.

During the sudden death hole, Stacey’s first shot went off to the right side of the fairway, while Dean’s zipped right down the alley.

Dean was able to capitalize on the drive, getting on the green with her next shot.

When it was all over, Dean was able to finish the whole with a four, while Stacey putted it in with a five.

“These girls worked really hard every day and are very unselfish,” said Rich coach Cody Lundgren. “It’s hard as a coach to watch them have to play against each other like that, but I’m happy for both of them. They both worked to get in that spot.”

“That was the scariest thing I’ve ever done in my entire life,” Dean said of the sudden death round. “I think I do better under pressure, and that helped.”

Dean’s score during the regular round was a personal best. She said that she and Stacey have pushed each other during practice through the year.

“There was so much pressure last year as a freshman,” Stacey said. “This year there wasn’t as much.”

Stacey said she generally shoots in the low 100s and was able to get a 98 during a practice round at Cove View, but her 91 was a new personal best.

“It’s always been my goal to hit the low 90s,” Stacey said.

Rich’s No. 3 golfer, Hannah Coburn, also hit a personal best by carding a 96.

“On hole nine it went into the trees,” Coburn said. When she went to look for the ball, it dropped out of the tree right in front of her.

It allowed her to pull out a five on the hole, as she crushed her previous top score of 102.
