OGDEN — The body of an 80-year-old man was recovered Monday from Ogden River, according to police.

Police said his vehicle and personal items were about one mile up-river from where he was recovered and concerned family members first alerted police.

"So we believe he fell in at that point and then had got caught in … an eddy along the bank about a mile down the river," explained Weber County Sheriff's Lt. Matt Jensen.

Heavy rescue teams from the Weber County, Ogden and Riverdale fire departments were working about 1:30 p.m. to recover the body.

Police still don't know how the man got in the river, but said they are treating it as an accidental death.

Jensen urged others not to go near the river, especially as temperatures warm.

"It's rocky and very swift," he said. "So it's very dangerous and we don't recommend anyone going even near the river because chances of surviving if you fall in are real slim."

Ogden Canyon was closed Monday afternoon while crews worked, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.

Police have not yet identified the man.
