CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The BYU women's rugby team capped an undefeated season by defeating Virginia Tech 48-0 in the D1 Spring College Championship on Saturday.
It's the first major title ever won by the 19-year-old club.
"You just finished the script of the jersey you're wearing. You will tell this story to your kids and to your grandkids," head coach Tom Waqa said after the match.
Emily Briggs, Larissa Graham, Sandy Kanuch, Rachael Strasdas, Pamela Patton and captain Gabrielle Peterson all scored tries for BYU in the victory. Balanced scoring is a hallmark of the Cougars, Peterson told USA Rugby.
"We just work so well as a team," she said. "We really worked together. We utilized our forwards and our backs to our advantage."
BYU defeated Stanford (65-0) and UC Santa Barbara (49-7) to advance to the championship game.
It's the first honors for the Cougars since the 2015-16 season when BYU was runner-up to Penn State in the D1 Elite championships.
"It feels so good," Peterson said. "I saw the team four years ago that took second place in the nation. I've seen the progress of our team."
Air Force defeated Davenport to win the D1 fall championship. Lindenwood claimed the D1 Elite title for the second straight season.
