Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox speaks at the under-construction Gail Miller Resource Center in Salt Lake City on Thursday, May 2, 2019. Officials announced Thursday they are naming the new homeless resource center after Gail Miller, owner of the Utah Jazz, because of her dedication and generosity toward ending homelessness in Utah.

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox has plenty on his plate, what with his family life, his current job as the state's second in command and his preparation for a possible 2020 gubernatorial run.

On Thursday, Cox showed that he can put a baseball above the plate from 60 feet 6 inches away, too. The lieutenant governor threw a low strike while tossing the ceremonial first pitch for an afternoon Salt Lake Bees baseball game on Utah Prevention Day.

Not surprisingly, that tweeted video resulted in some fun exchanges, including Tooele County School District superintendent Dr. Scott A. Rogers asking Cox if that was his curveball, fastball or change-up.

"Every pitch is a change-up since I hit 40," Cox joked back.

Steve Klauke, the longtime radio voice of the Bees, delivered a great line with the pitch. He joked that it's no surprise Utah's second in command is a righty.

Overlooked?

National college football writer Stewart Mandel addressed the disparity in rankings when it comes to Utah's football team.

To sum up his response in his mailbag Q&A on The Athletic: He's not sure.

"I can’t speak to anyone else’s reasoning, though it’s been my observation that the Utes tend to get overlooked on a year-to-year basis as much as any program in the country," Mandel wrote. "Also, though Utah won the Pac-12 South last season, it did finish just 9-5 and did not crack the final Top 25 polls. If you’re someone who’s just looking at those numbers, perhaps the Utes don’t even get on to your radar."

As for Mandel's rankings, he likes that QB Tyler Huntley and RB Zack Moss will be back from injuries, that the Utes have a deep and dangerous defense and that Kyle Whittingham's team is coming back from a Pac-12 South Division championship.

"I don’t know if they’ll pull it off," he added, "but on paper, the Utes arguably have the fewest preseason questions of any Pac-12 team and thus checked in all the way up at No. 12 for me."

Camping trip

Former BYU receiver Jonah Trinnaman was among the NFL hopefuls headed to camp this week, and his smile showed he's as excited as a Boy Scout en route to a mountain adventure.
