GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Dixie State baseball opened its final series of the 2019 regular season on the wrong end of a hard-fought 9-6 decision at No. 1/No. 5 Colorado Mesa Thursday night at Suplizio Field. The loss snapped the Trailblazers’ five-game winning streak as DSU fell to 32-15 overall, 22-11 in RMAC play, while the Mavericks (39-8/27-6 RMAC) clinched their eighth-straight conference crown and the No. 1 seed in next week’s RMAC tournament with the victory.
Trailing 3-2 after the first two innings of play, the Trailblazers rallied for three big runs in the third on their way to their only lead of the night at 5-3. Jake Engel gave Dixie State a 4-3 advantage when he cashed in a lead-off Zach Thomas walk with his team-leading 13th home run of the season. Tyson Fisher then followed with a two-out single, stole second and came around to score on a Wyatt Branch RBI-single to provide the two-run cushion.
Unfortunately that lead would be short-lived as the Mavericks rallied for two runs in the home third and two more in the fourth to reclaim the lead at 7-5. Dixie State would get one of those runs back in the sixth thanks to a Bryce Feist one-out RBI-hit that trimmed the deficit to 7-6, then had runners on second and third and two outs in the eighth after a Maverick error and Braxton Ipson double extended the frame.Comment on this story
However, CMU escaped the jam with the lead intact and would tack on a pair of insurance runs in its half of the stanza to extend to a three-run advantage. Maverick closer Will Dixon (S, 9) then retired the Blazers in order in the ninth to end the game.
Dixie State pounded out 10 hits in the opener, led by Kaid Urban who tripled in a run in the second as part of a 2-for-3 night with a pair of runs scored, while Engel finished 1-for-5 with his homer.
The Trailblazers will look to even the series in Game 2 on Friday night beginning at 6 p.m. (MT).
