PROVO — A local oral surgeon is offering to pull some teeth for free to help ease the burden for at least one student facing mounting debt.

"Attending higher education is so much more expensive now than when I went to school," said Dr. Michael Harris, oral and maxillofacial surgeon with Utah Surgical Arts. He said education is important, but oral health is, too.

Utah Surgical Arts, which offers wisdom teeth removal at its South Jordan, Payson and Provo locations, is asking students to apply for its Wisdom for Wisdom program, now until May 14, at utahsurgicalarts.com.

Wisdom teeth typically erupt between ages 17 and 25, though they are developing much earlier. There is often not enough space to accommodate the new teeth, which can lead to oral health complications, such as infection, decay and tooth damage.

One recipient will be chosen May 15 to have free wisdom teeth extractions to offset the rising cost of going to college, Harris said.
