TUCSON, Ariz. — Utah State junior golfer Chase Lansford is currently tied for third place and is just one stroke off the lead after carding a 4-under-par 68 during the first round of the 2019 Mountain West Men’s Golf Championship held here Friday at the par-72, 7,194-yard Catalina Course at Omni Tucson National Resort.
For Lansford, his opening round 68 is his best round of the season, eighth career round in the 60s and 17th career round under par, including his third this year. Lansford began his round by carding a 4-under 32 on the front nine with four birdies and no bogeys and then scored an even-par 36 on the back nine with one birdie and one bogey.
Sophomore Andy Hess also had an under-par day for the Aggies as he fired a 2-under 70 and is currently tied for 13th place. Hess began his round with a 2-under 34 on the front nine with three birdies and one bogey and followed that up with a birdie and bogey on the last nine holes for an even-par 36. For Hess, it was his seventh round under par this season and the 11th of his career.
Freshman Cameron Tucker was one of just three players to have a bogey-free round on Friday as he carded a 1-under 71 and is currently tied for 20th place. Tucker pared the first 12 holes before birding the par-4 13th, followed by five more pars to conclude his round. For Tucker, it was his second under-par round of the season.
Rounding out the first day of competition for Utah State was junior Hayden Eckert, who is tied for 53rd place with a 7-over 79 and sophomore Colten Cordingley, who is in 55th place with a 12-over 84.
The 54-hole tournament will continue on Saturday with the second round beginning at 7 a.m. MDT. On Saturday, USU golfers will be grouped with players from Wyoming with tee times starting at 7:40 a.m. PDT. The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Sunday.
