New York City is putting the rest of the United States to shame, with Mayor Bill de Blasio planning to reduce the city’s greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030, with the goal of full carbon neutrality by 2050.

The plan, referred to as “New York City’s Green New Deal,” includes significant measures that can truly help combat climate change, not to mention improve public health and lessen animal suffering. Among other things, the plan will reduce the amount of meat served in schools, hospitals, and other city-run facilities by 50%, and eventually eliminate processed meat from the menu at these institutions.

This begs the question: What are other cities waiting for?

Meat and other animal-derived foods require more resources and cause more greenhouse gas emissions than do vegan foods. Research shows that meat-eaters are responsible for about 2 1/2 times as many dietary greenhouse gas emissions per day as vegans.

If we’re serious about saving the environment, helping animals and preventing — and even reversing — life-threatening diseases, we need to follow NYC’s lead and eat less meat and more vegan meals.
