Tommy Vincent, Cyprus (Sr.)

This senior has been instrumental in leading Cyprus to a 15-3 record this year and a 9-0 mark in Region 2.

“Tommy is just a tough, tough all-around versatile baseball player,” said Cyprus coach Bob Fratto. “He is the guy we hand the ball to on the mound most of the time in region games on the road.”

For the season Vincent is 4-1 on the mound, and last week had a 19-inning scoreless streak snapped. At the plate he’s hitting .408, and when he’s not pitching he’s played both third base and second base this season.

“But beyond the numbers and more importantly, along with Jakson Alba, our only other senior on the team, they are the unquestioned leaders and fire behind our success so far this season,” said Fratto.

A first team all-state outfield last season, Hawker has been even better this season for the Braves.

For the season she’s hitting .521 with 25 hits, five doubles, 19 runs and 17 stolen bases. She’s got a .558 on-base percentage and is slugging .688.

“Libbie has been our lead-off hitter and is an outstanding center fielder. She is as good in the classroom as she is on the field. These things have propelled her to a full-ride scholarship at Utah State,” said Bountiful coach Butch Latey.

Last week Hawker led Bountiful to wins over Pleasant Grove, Box Elder and Farmington, recording an extra base hit in all three games.

Connor Smith, Waterford (Jr.)

An outstanding goal scorer for Waterford, Connor Smith is coming off a week in which he scored seven goals in three games, including the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over APA West Valley.

“Connor is an undeniable threat whenever he touches the ball. He has the ability to beat people off the dribble or make a creative run to open up space for his teammates. There is not a position on the field that he cannot play and add something to the team. He loves the game and it shows every time he steps on the pitch. Undoubtedly, we are a better team with Connor in a Waterford jersey,” said Waterford coach George Shirley.

Ethan Hammond has enjoyed a strong senior season on the court despite juggling many responsibilities.

At first singles he’s compiled a 5-1 record this season, and in his five wins he’s dropped just five games.

“He is an accomplished cello player, had the lead in the school play, and maintains a 3.75 GPA. His leadership as team captain helps others in striving to excel,” said Gunnison coach Keith Erickson.

Not only did he win the 110 and 300 hurdles, but his time of 38.32 in the 300 ranks as the best mark in Utah this season. His 110 time of 15.04 ranks second.

"Devon exemplifies what every coach looks for in an athlete and team captain. He expects the best out of himself, and helps others achieve the best in themselves. It has been an honor and privilege to coach this fine young man,” said Bear River coach Chad Hurst.

Roberts finished third at state in both hurdles events, but this year he’ll be the 4A athlete to beat.

Comment on this story

“Lauren just started vaulting this past winter. In a very short period of time has showed she is a natural. Her gymnastics background is helping her out tremendously. It goes to show that athletes should never be afraid of trying new things. Lauren is also excelling in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles and runs on our 4x100 team. We are grateful to have her on our team,” said Orem coach Andy Jacobs.

Merrill’s 100 hurdles time of 15.33 is the fourth-best time in the entire state this season, and her 300 hurdles time of 44.74 also ranks fourth in Utah.
