SALT LAKE CITY — Last weekend, "Star Wars" fans across the world took to social media to share their responses and reactions to the “Rise of Skywalker” trailer.
One of those fans is Eric Butts, a YouTuber who shared his emotional response to the trailer.
In the video of Butts’ response, he can be seen getting teary-eyed and gasping with excitement over the trailer.
Note: The video has not been shared below due to mature language.
“How do they make this more and more epic every time?” Butts says at the end of the video, blowing his nose and wiping his eyes with a tissue.
Though Butts had lots of good things to say about the film, a few social media users did not have lots of good things to say about Butts.
Twitter user @stclairashley posted the video to her 55,000 followers, saying, “Star Wars and superhero movie obsession culture has revealed a whole new population of undateable men. Might be worse than men who wear cargo shorts.”
Another Twitter user posted the video, commenting, “Even though this soybag deleted it, here’s the video.”
Butts deleted the original video. However, it was retweeted and commented on hundreds of thousands of times, with many comments shaming Butts for his teary-eyed response.
The critical comments about Butts’ video have caught the attention of Mark Hamill, who came to the fan’s defense.1 comment on this story
Hamill responded to one Twitter user with, “Why anyone would ridicule someone so passionate & clearly enjoying what he's seeing is beyond me.”
Hamill later responded to Butts in a tweet, saying, “Hi Eric. Thanks for sharing your amazing reaction to the trailer. It was inspiring to see you transported with joy in anticipation of IX. Makes what we do seem all the more worthwhile.”
Butts also received lots of support from other Twitter users coming to his defense.
“The Rise of Skywalker” hits theaters December 20.
