Senior Brenn Flint at Day 2 of the Aggie Invitational

LOGAN– Utah State senior thrower Brenn Flint has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, April 14, it was announced Monday. The award is voted on by a statewide media panel.

It is the first time this year and fourth time in her career that Flint has been named USU's student-athlete of the week. With their sponsorship of the Student-Athlete of the Week, America First Credit Union donates funds directly to support student-athlete scholarships.

The native of Syracuse, Utah, swept the shot put and discus titles on the final day of the Aggie Invitational last weekend, as she recorded throws of 15.79 meters (51-9.75) and 46.95 meters (154-0), respectively.

Utah State is back in action this weekend in California at four meets as individuals will compete at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on Thursday, April 18; at the Azusa Pacific Invitational from Thursday through Saturday, April 18-20; at the Mt. SAC Relays from Thursday through Saturday, April 18-20; and at the Long Beach State Invitational from Friday through Saturday, April 19-20.

Nominees from other sports for USU Student-Athlete of the Week included:

GOLF – Junior Hayden Eckert (Buhl, Idaho) carded a final round of 1-under-par 71 to finish tied for 43rd place at 2-over 218 (74-73-71) last week at the Wyoming-hosted Cowboy Classic in Chandler, Arizona. Eckert’s final-round 71 was his third round under par this season and the 12th of his career, while his 54-hole score of 218 was a season-low. Utah State finished in 18th place in the 20-team field at 26-over 890 (293-299-298).

SOFTBALL – Freshman shortstop Lexi Orozco (San Marcos, California) led Utah State as it lost all three of its Mountain West games at Boise State last weekend (L 6-10, L 2-10 (5), L 8-12). In the series opener, Orozco went 2-for-4 at the plate, including a home run. She had two RBIs in the game, while adding three putouts and three assists defensively. In the second game, Orozco batted 1-for-3 with a double and had one RBI. She also added one putout and two assists. In the weekend finale, Orozco was 2-for-2 at the plate, including a home run. She was also walked twice and scored three runs, while batting in two. She added one putout and two assists defensively. On the week, Orozco batted a team-high .566 (5-for-9), including one double and two home runs and two walks, while scoring four runs and adding five RBIs. Defensively, she finished the series with five putouts, seven assists and a perfect fielding percentage.

MEN’S TENNIS – Sophomore Felipe Acosta (Chascomus, Argentina), posted a combined 3-0 record last week as Utah State posted a 2-0 Mountain West road record with a 4-2 win at Fresno State and a 4-0 victory at Nevada. Against the Bulldogs, Acosta teamed with freshman Isaac Arevalo Gómez at the No. 2 spot in doubles play, clinching the point with a 6-2 win. Acosta's singles match at the No. 4 spot went unfinished as he lost his first set and won his second set, 6-3. Against the Wolf Pack, Acosta clinched the doubles point with Arevalo Gómez at the second spot, 6-4, and also clinched the match in singles play with a straight-sets win at the No. 4 spot (6-3, 6-4), good enough for his sixth match-clinching point of the season.

WOMEN’S TENNIS – Freshman Gabrielle Dekkers (Ammerzoden, Netherlands) posted a combined 4-0 record last week as Utah State posted a 1-1 Mountain West home record with a 4-2 loss against Wyoming and a come-from-behind 4-3 win against Colorado State. Against the Cowgirls, Dekkers recorded a straight-sets win at the No. 4 spot (6-1, 6-1), and teamed with freshman Sidnee Lavatai in doubles play, as their match at the third spot went unfinished, as their score was 6-5. Against the Rams, Dekkers won at the No. 5 spot in straight sets (6-2, 7-6 (4)) for the Aggies' only straight-sets win.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD – Sophomore Josh Barclay (Paul, Idaho) won the shot put at the Aggie Invitational last weekend with a personal-best throw of 17.41 meters (57-1.5). He also placed fourth in the discus with a heave of 47.25 meters (155-0).
