SALT LAKE CITY — Utah contestant Ashley Hess continues to impress on “American Idol.”
Hess, a former student of Utah Valley University, advanced to the top 14 in the competition show after singing with Jason Mraz on Sunday night’s episode.
The 27-year-old singer from California and Mraz collaborated for “I’m Yours,” which was one of her favorite songs during high school.
“I remember being in high school just listening to this song and like driving around,” Hess said. “It’s just like such a feel-good song.”

The two competed against nine other top-20 contestants on the All-Star Duets episode of “American Idol” with their duet. Judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan agreed Hess’ performance was top level.
Hess admitted she was surprised to receive the “opportunity of a lifetime” to perform with Mraz.
"Your voice was pristine, and the two of you together were just locked,” Richie said. “It was amazing.”
Hess moves onto the top 14 episode of “American Idol,” which airs next Sunday at 7 p.m.
