Last Tuesday, Sen. Mike Lee claimed that the key to solving climate change was to “fall in love, get married, and have babies” so that our babies can supposedly save the world.

There are a lot of things that I want to say about this statement (and most of them wouldn’t be too nice) but I’ll just stick with one: Maybe that was your dad’s solution, Sen. Lee. Maybe that was your grandfather’s. But the cycle can end with you. Don’t push today’s problems onto tomorrow’s children, while mocking the solutions that yesterday’s children have come up with today.

Let’s end the idea that someone else will clean up our mess, that someone else will make it all better. Maybe that was acceptable as a child, Sen. Lee. Your parents cleaned up your messes and probably made it all better. But now is the time to put away childish things, and not push them into the laps of other children.

It is our time. This is our world. This is our mess. Let’s do what we can to clean it.
