On March 6, a Utah Highway Patrol trooper stopped the car the men were driving for speeding on I-70, according to charging documents.

"While talking to the occupants I noticed multiple criminal indicators such as nervousness, inconsistent stories, criminal history and recent trips to Mexico," the trooper wrote in charging documents.

During a search of the vehicle, 8½ pounds of heroin were found with an estimated street value of $350,000, the charges state. Investigators learned both men had recently made multiple trips back and forth to Mexico.
