VINEYARD — A 6-year-old died Wednesday when she was hit by an SUV in Vineyard, authorities said.
Just before 3:30 p.m., the girl was riding a scooter along Parkway Place near Vineyard Elementary School when a woman pulled out of a driveway and hit her, Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon said.
According to Cannon, the driver had backed out of her driveway into a cul-de-sac, then turned left to drive away when the girl came down another driveway on a battery powered scooter and rode into the path of the SUV.
Efforts to revive the girl were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead on scene, Cannon said. Her name was not immediately released pending notification of family members.
Cannon said the death appears to be an accident and the driver was cooperating with investigators, including completing drug testing that is standard following this kind of incident.Comment on this story
"Investigators do not suspect negligence, carelessness, or impairment as factors, and initial test results are negative for drugs or alcohol. Based on information known at this time there will be no charges filed against the driver," Cannon said.
Later Wednesday in South Salt Lake, another 6-year-old girl was hit by a car and suffered a leg fracture. South Salt Lake police executive officer Gary Keller said the girl was playing with other children in a commercial complex at 3570 S. West Temple when she ran into an alley and was hit by a car.
The girl was transported to a hospital in critical condition, though the injuries were not considered life threatening. The incident is believed to be an accident, Keller said.
