SALT LAKE CITY — Gearbox Software released a new trailer Wednesday for a new “Borderlands” video game that will be completely unveiled Thursday.

The trailer doesn’t include any gameplay. However, it includes multiple characters and enemies from the “Borderlands” video game series.

Watch the trailer, which is called “Mask of Mayhem," below:

Why it matters: “It’s a stylish way to get fans excited for the series again, without showing anything that would dull the impact of the actual gameplay or story reveal,” according to Polygon.

  • “A trailer like this also sends a message: These characters, and this style, have become iconic. Gearbox doesn’t have to come up with a hook to get people excited; it just needs to hint that more of that thing you like is coming. All of the familiar aspects of the series are here, just carved out of stone in a design that ultimately resolves to a very familiar mask.”

Easter eggs: The new trailer contains several hidden messages about the “Borderlands” series. For example, there’s some morse code "Count the Sirens,” according to Nerdist. There’s also a Braille message that translates as “Follow and Obey.”

More hints: Gearbox tweeted an image of a highway sign with “March 28” sprawled across it.

Gearbox president Randy Pitchford has teased fans for years that Gearbox was working on a new project, which was believed to be “Borderlands 3.”

Gearbox released “Borderlands 2” back in 2012.
