ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. — The Weber State men's golf team defeated Southern Utah 3.5 to 1.5 on Tuesday at Cypress Ridge Golf Club to earn the consolation championship at the Cal Poly Match Play tournament.
The Wildcats went 2-1 overall during the event, dropping a 3.5-1.5 decision against top-seeded UC Santa Barbara to open the tournament on Monday morning before defeating Cal Poly 4-1 in the consolation semifinals in the afternoon.
Hunter Howe led the Wildcats for the tournament, going undefeated with a 2-0-1 record. Howe scored the lone full point for the Wildcats against UCSB with a dominating 8 and 6 win over Tyler See to open the tournament. He then added a 4 and 3 victory over Cal Poly's Sage Casaga for his second win of the day. On Tuesday, Howe halved his match against Southern Utah's Ryker Smith.Comment on this story
Jayce Frampton and Boston Watts each went 2-1 during the tournament. Frampton defeated Cal Poly's Peter Faragia 4 and 3 in the Wildcats win over the Mustangs and closed his tournament with a 2 and 1 win over SUU's Hayden Plewe. Watts earned his wins with a 2 and 1 victory over Tanner Podres of Cal Poly and a 6 and 5 victory over Ali Hameed of Southern Utah.
Reese Fisher went 1-2 in the top spot in the Wildcats' lineup, earning a full point for WSU with his 2-up win over SUU's Jake Vincent on Tuesday. Sean Badger earned 1.5 points for the 'Cats as he halved a match against UCSB's Justin Sheparovich before defeating Cal Poly's Cade Casaga 1-up.
UC Irvine won the championship match for the tournament title, defeating UCSB 3.5-1.5. The Anteaters went undefeated in the tournament as they defeated CSU-Northridge and Utah State on the opening day.
