The boy, who Hatfield said is in elementary school, became entangled in a jump rope attached to a slide on the playhouse. The rope wrapped around the boy's neck, according to the captain.
The playhouse was not sold with the rope, Hatfield said, adding that it appeared to have been added. The incident appears to have been an accident, according to Hatfield.
Hatfield declined to provide additional details about the boy, including his name or age. He said he did not know if someone else was playing with the child at the time or who discovered him and called 911.
The boy was flown to Primary Children's Medical Center in critical condition.
