SALT LAKE CITY — Apex Legends has released its first full season battle pass, and with it came a new character named Octane.

The new character — which you can learn more about in the video below — comes as a legendary character that will cost 750 Apex coins (or about $7.50) to purchase.

  • “Fresh off a record-breaking gauntlet speed-run, Octane is jumping into the Apex Games with even bigger ambitions. With abilities that let him trade health for speed, regenerate the health he lost, and drop a launch pad that shoots him and his teammates into the air, he never has to slow down,” according to the game’s YouTube page description.

Here’s how Kotaku breaks down the character:

  • “Octane has a daredevil backstory, and his abilities are appropriately all about movement. He looks a bit like a Borderlands character, with his midriff-baring shirt and goggles, and he also has bionic legs. His tactical ability lets him trade a bit of health for a six second speed boost, an ability that’s aided by his passive, which lets him regenerate health over time when out of combat. Planned correctly, you can use his speed boost pretty much with impunity, since you’ll regenerate the health it costs as long as you stay away from gunfire.”

Joke: It turns out that Octane’s design is based off an inside joke, according to the character’s official biography:

  • “One day, Octavio Silva was bored. In fact, he was bored most days. Heir to the preoccupied CEOs of Silva Pharmaceuticals and wanting for nothing in life, he entertained himself by performing death-defying stunts and posting holovids of them for his fans to gawk over. So, this day, he decided to set the course record for a nearby Gauntlet by launching himself across the finish line — using a grenade.”
  • That’s a reference to a trick in EA’s “Titanfall” game —“Apex Legends” is connected to the “Titanfall” universe — that some gamers tried to accomplish a record by boosting their speed by jumping on grenades, according to Forbes.

Flashback: Earlier this month, reports among esports and video game websites suggested that Octane would be included in the game around the time of the battle pass, which I wrote about for the Deseret News.
