SALT LAKE CITY — The first trailer for “Toy Story 4” dropped online Tuesday, and it’s garnered a lot of buzz (no pun intended) online, namely for a detail that has many fans of the film scratching their heads: Andy’s appearance.

What’s happening: In the trailer for “Toy Story 4,” there’s a scene where a boy with Andy’s iconic red hat can be seen spinning through a room that looks like Andy’s room with Buzz Lightyear and Jessie the Cowgirl in tow.

Comment on this story
  • We know from other scenes in the trailer that Woody and his friends are currently in Bonnie’s possession.
  • We also know from a clip from the film that was released in February that, at some point, the timeline of “Toy Story 4” jumps backward. In the clip, Bo Peep can be seen in her old outfit helping Woody and their friends rescue the remote controlled car Woody and Buzz used to pursue the moving van in the first film.
  • These details imply that the scene with the boy is very likely a flashback to when the toys lived with Andy.

Andy’s appearance: Fans of the film have noticed that if the boy is, in fact, Andy, he looks significantly different than he did in the first film.

Some have noted that redesigning/upgrading a character’s appearance is not new for Pixar.

Others have suggested the boy could be Andy’s son and the toys are somehow back in the family, though others have pointed out that that theory doesn’t seem to hold up.

“Toy Story 4” hits theaters June 21.
