LINCOLN, Calif. — Dixie State’s women’s golf team stands in fourth place after the opening round of play at the 2019 Holy Names/Mikuni Sushi Shootout played Monday at Catta Verdera Country Club.

The Trailblazers finished their opening loop with a combined 23-over par 311, 11 shots back of clubhouse leader Cal State San Marcos (300, +12). CSUSM is one stroke clear of second-place Academy of Art (301, +13) and eight shots ahead of Cal State Monterey Bay (308, +20) heading into Tuesday’s final round.

Four Trailblazers finished day one in the top-25 of the 72-player leaderboard, highlighted by junior Ashley Fernandez, who carded in a field-high 14 pars on her way to a 5-over 77 to stand in an eight-way tie for 12th overall.

Freshman Tayllore Ward also fired a 77 to join Fernandez in the group tied for 12th after she penciled in a team-high three birdies, while senior Katie Ford posted an opening 6-over 76 with 13 pars to stand tied for 20th. Sophomore Cailyn Cardall followed, tied for 24th place at plus-7 79, and sophomore Kaitlynn Deeble is tied for 31st at plus-8 80.

Dixie State will look to move up the leaderboard in Tuesday’s final round, which begins at 9 a.m. PST.
