Currently there is a need to honor all our men and women in law enforcement and fire and rescue for their life safety services, similar to how we honor our military on Veterans Day.

Our recent 115th Congress had resolutions in both chambers for a national day to honor first responders. The Senate passed its resolution but the House version went to a committee never to be voted on.

My suggestion, at least for this year, is to honor them on March 17 — St. Patrick’s Day. This day is celebrated nationally but is not a paid day off national holiday. There is strong historical evidence that the Irish, beginning around the 1840s, made lasting developmental contributions to both services.

Parades and other civic and social events celebrating this holiday will give us the opportunity to applaud them for their dedicated service and protection.

This honor is long overdue.
