Brighton’s Rachel Butler smiles after competing in the 200 yard IM at the 5A state meet in Provo on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019.

PROVO — A lot of high school swim coaches know months before the state championships whether their team is capable of winning it all. But for Brighton coach Todd Etherington, who is as experienced and respected as any coach in the state, he didn't know until about a week prior.

Sure enough, Etherington's team beat expectations on Saturday, taking the 5A boys championship for a second year in a row, albeit with a much different look.

"With what we graduated last year, this is very unexpected," Etherington said. "I graduated some really good and fast boys, but it's all about (the boys) and what they put in. They came together and certainly got to a point I didn't know they were capable of until late in the season. I couldn't be prouder of them."

According to Etherington, a state championship wasn't really in his thoughts regarding this year's boys team until the region finals, when his team really served notice.

"They just came together, and it's a young team, but they just kept working and working and now we're here as state champions," Etherington said.

Getting that championship wasn't easy, with the Bengals narrowly getting by Cottonwood by 17 points (310-293), which made every single swim of the utmost importance. When asked which of his swimmers led the way, Etherington turned the question around, asking rhetorically, "Who didn't? You don't get this by just a few swimmers. Everyone had to step up and everyone did at the end of the year and certainly did today."

As close as the boys' competition was, the girls' couldn't have been much closer.

Lining up for the final swim of the competition, the Wasatch girls 400 freestyle relay team knew it had to secure a high finish to win the team competition.

"We knew we had to take third, and we needed to put our best race together to get it," said Wasatch coach Shawn Marsing.

Marsing's girls accomplished just that, securing a third-place finish by about four seconds over fourth-place Skyline and needed all of the 32 points awarded for third place to get by Timpview 254-252.

"I couldn't be prouder of all the girls on this team. All of them," Marsing said. "This is the greatest team I've ever coached. I can't say enough of them."

The Wasps took just one first-place finish on the day, but had enough swimmers finish near the top in most events to put enough points together for the team championship.

"I love these girls and I couldn't ask for a better group," Marsing said.

Marsing took coach of the year honors for the girls side, with Etherington taking the honor for the boys' competition.

Swimmers of the year were Cottonwood's Blayze Kimble, who took the 200 individual medley title, the 100 breaststroke and was part of both of the Colts' relay championships. In the girls' competition it was Brighton's Rachel Butler earning swimmer of the year on top of wins in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle.
