Corner Canyon and Alta play their final region basketball game against each other on Friday, Feb. 8, at Corner Canyon High School.

DRAPER — In front of a packed crowd, Corner Canyon defeated its rival Alta with a final score of 77-62 on Friday night.

“It’s a rivalry game, but it’s just another game for us,” Corner Canyon head coach Dan Lunt said. "Our goal is to win out through league play and this was the next step. We did a good job, executed at times and did a good enough job to win.

“We wanted to try and contain Hunter Humphreys and (Jaden) Brownell and they did a pretty good job, but I think we did other things, took some other people out of the game. And I thought offensively, we executed when we needed to execute, we got the ball inside when we needed to get it inside, we got hit some big shots when we needed to hit shots.”

Corner Canyon’s Hayden Welling led all scorers with 25 points.

“He played a very good game," Lunt said. "When we got the ball to him in the post, he finished. I know he probably had double-digit rebounds, I’m guessing, because he played a solid game."

" Every player that’s on the floor is important because that’s what makes us tick. "

Gabe Toombs scored 16 points, Luke Warnock scored 13 points, John Mitchell scored 12 points and Trace Ross added 11 points, and all of the Chargers' points were scored among as those five players.

“Every player that’s on the floor is important because that’s what makes us tick. You go off one guy, someone else knocks down a shot. I know early on, when we started to separate, they left Luke open and he knocked down threes, and that’s how it’s been all year, whether it’s Luke, whether it’s Gabe, whether it’s Trace, whether it’s John Mitchell — they gave him some shots, he knocked them down,” Lunt said. “That’s what makes us tick. You take something away from us, we have enough tools that we’re going to make something else happen.”

Corner Canyon made a 9-0 run to end the first quarter and take control of the game. The Chargers would lead the rest of the way.

“During that first quarter, you’ve got to give Alta credit. They came out and made some tough shots and they executed and did a great job. During that time we kind of separated, we finally got some stops and made some buckets,” Lunt said.

Jaden Brownell led the Hawks with 20 points, while Hunter Humphreys scored 14.

“Alta’s a good team. They’ve got good players," Lunt said. "They’ve got a good future in front of them this year because they have some solid kids."

The atmosphere on Friday was top-notch, with both schools’ student sections making up the majority of the crowd. Both student sections were loud, coordinated and engaged the whole game. The game marked the last basketball game that the two rivals would play in the same region, as Alta will remain in 5A Region 7, while Corner Canyon will move to 6A Region 4. As the game drew to a close, Corner Canyon students chanted “We won’t miss you” to the Alta student section.

“It was a great atmosphere," Lunt said. "We haven’t had a lot of home games, I think we had our tournament earlier in the year and when we got to region — that was our first Friday home game. When you’re winning, people show up and it was a fantastic atmosphere."
