Sen. Jani Iwamoto, D-Holladay, recently announced that she may run a bill aimed at reducing the use of plastic grocery bags. Iwamoto’s idea is to charge shoppers 10 cents per bag.8 comments on this story
I applaud the idea of encouraging protection of the environment. Approximately 940 million plastic bags are discarded in Utah every year. They could take up to 1,000 years to decompose in the landfill. This is absolutely unacceptable.
However, I disagree with the idea of instituting a one-size-fits-all statewide tax. Park City and Moab currently have bans, and Logan is mulling one over. It’s important to maintain local control and I believe this problem can be sufficiently addressed by working with municipalities toward an equitable solution.
