It’s agonizing seeing your favorite sports team lose or the outcome change because of referees’ calls, targeting players, unsportsmanlike conduct, illegal contributions, false accusations or lack of self-control.

Watching our government function is like watching a bad sporting event: Democrats vs. Republicans. It appears as if one team wants so badly to topple the first-place team that it is pulling out all stops to do so.

These paid referees refuse to call a game according to the rules of fair play and sportsmanship, instead they use their biased authority to take out key players they perceive should not get ahead in the game.

Shame on any team and its fans who promote arrogance, lack of integral play and civility, while participating both in and out of the game. It seems their only goal is total destruction of the other. Where is the respect for the opposition, who won the selection voting process to be in the No. 1 position? What are they teaching new players or anyone thinking of joining future teams? Is it courageous or cowardly to challenge the opposition by calling them immoral, shouting nasty and crude names at them or by playing dirty and harassing fans? Can we not play the game in the spirit of friendly competition according to the rules?

As kids we were taught: “It’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game that counts.” Today’s attitude appears to be: By any and all means do whatever it takes to win.

If you destroy the players and the fans, you may also destroy the game itself along the way.
