Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez takes a moment between interviews in New York, Wednesday, June 27, 2018. The 28-year-old political newcomer who upset U.S. Rep. Joe Crowley in New York's Democrat primary says she brings an "urgency" to the fight for working families.

SALT LAKE CITY — Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez surprised Sundance Film Festival attendees on Saturday with a brief cameo appearance, USA Today reports.

What happened: Fans were at first disappointed when they learned that Ocasio-Cortez wouldn’t appear at the premiere of “Knock Down the House,” which is a documentary centered around the campaigns launched by herself and three other hopeful congressional representatives.

  • The New York representative said on Twitter she was working on the government reopening. She said, “this film was made, with love, for people.”

But then: Something else happened — Ocasio-Cortez still participated in a Q&A via a livestream.

  • "This is my first time seeing (the film) in its final form and I'm still recovering from the tears myself," Ocasio-Cortez said. "But I'm just so glad that this moment for the four of us was captured and documented. Not just for the personal meaning of it, but for everyday people to see that yes, this is incredibly challenging and yes, the odds are long, but also yes, that it's worth it. Each and every person who submits themselves to run for office is doing a great service to this country."
  • "Everybody said we couldn't do it," Ocasio-Cortez says in the film. "We had like $2 in December and now look where we are: April 2018, we're on the ballot."

Not Trump: Ocasio-Cortez said she doesn’t think President Donald Trump is the only problem with the current political problem, The Huffington Post reports.

  • “This is not just about the president of the United States,” she said. “He could be gone tomorrow and that will not change the systemic injustices that led to his election, so it’s important that we continue to be all hands on deck in this fight.”
