BYU football coaches hit the recruiting trail hard in January, working to fill out the Class of 2019 while keeping an eye on exceptional talent for future classes. While the coaching staff extended scholarship offers to student-athletes across the country, they also hosted several recruits in Provo for official and unofficial visits.
Their efforts were rewarded as verbal commitments came last week from three-star tight end Trey Andersen and three-star defensive end Cade Albright. The team also added depth to the Class of 2019 with verbal commitments for preferred walk-on spots from Nathan Upham, Fisher Jackson and Bailey Sulzer.
The following statistics and summaries are for each of the new verbal commits.
Trey Andersen (TE, Lehi). Andersen is a three-star tight end who caught 28 passes for 487 yards and two touchdowns as a senior at Lehi. He moves well for being 6-foot-6 and 240 pounds, running a 4.81 forty. Andersen also plays on the basketball team and is a state champion in the shot put. He has a lot of room to grow and could end up at a number of different positions when he returns from his LDS mission in 2021.
Cade Albright (DE, San Juan Capistrano, California). Albright is a three-star defensive end who is a one man wrecking crew. He accrued 62 tackles, with 33 tackles for loss and 19 sacks as a senior at San Juan Hills. He also blocked two punts and had 25 quarterback hurries. Albright has scholarship offers from UC-Davis, UCLA, Utah, Utah State and Yale, with recruiting interest from Cal, Nebraska and USC. He plans to serve an LDS mission and will join the Cougars as part of the Class of 2021.
Nathan Upham (WR, Lehi). The 6-foot-4 receiver caught 54 passes for 1,157 yards (21.4 avg.) and 13 touchdowns as a senior. He also pulled down two interceptions on defense. He runs a 4.53 forty and was a first-team all-state performer on the baseball team at Skyridge High School. He’ll join BYU as a preferred walk-on.
Fisher Jackson (WR/FS, Herriman). Jackson is a 6-foot-5 receiver and safety at Herriman High School. As a senior, he had 14 receptions for 135 yards and four touchdowns along with five interceptions. He also plays rugby for Herriman. Jackson will join BYU in 2019 as a preferred walk-on.
Bailey Sulzer (RB/MLB, Cottonwood, California). Sultzer had eye-popping numbers for his senior season at West Valley High School. He rushed 283 times for 2,054 yards with 29 touchdowns on offense, and recorded 150 tackles with 17 tackles for loss and four forced fumbles on defense. He runs a 4.56 forty and can bench 295 pounds. He’ll be joining the Cougars in 2021 after serving a Spanish-speaking mission to Oregon.
